Happy New Year - have you kick-started 2010 or are you still in hibernation?

20-01-2010

Resolutions by their nature get broken, whereas realistic but challenging and exciting goals go for the long-term especially when it comes to our continued health and fitness...

New Years resolutions are short-term goals that a, we wait until the last minute to start b, don't really want to do c, see as depriving ourselves of something or d, set ourselves up to fail!  Why put yourself through that?  That doesn't mean i'm not up for setting ourselves challenges and goals - i'm all for it and do it myself but set realistic, interesting, challenging goals that you actually want to do.  This might be that 10km run or (half) marathon, that triathlon in Sept, joining the local cricket/rugby/5-aside/athletics/local jogging team or including sports massage as part of your maintenance programme to help you train harder this year and stay injury free.  That way its a longer term life-style change that will meet some of your goals be it loosing weight, getting fitter, shaping up and generally looking after yourself better now and into your future beyond 31st Dec 2010!

I didn't make any resolutions myself but i have got some things I want to do (once i'm out of this snowy hibernation!) and especially before I hit 40 next year!).  For me it's realistic challenges i will have to step up to but know i can fit it in around work and 2 small children.  My own goals include a 10km run in May or half marathon (never done one before), doing the Newbury Tri sports massage provision again in Sept, continued professional development with courses booked from cadaever studies to Thai massage, cervical spine, shoulder to further knee and hip studies. I also intend to do some housy stuff, get some campervan weekends in with the family, squeeze in some weekends away with the hub etc etc.  Not massively challenging you may say, but will keep me healthy and happy, which, at the end of the day is everybodies underlying resolution is it not?
